Arena - view of the stage
The huge, elliptical Amphitheatre
has including the outer walls a dimension of 152 m resp. 122 m
and is one of the biggest and undoubtedly the best conserved of the roman
monuments in the world. Built in the first century AD, it boasts 2000 years
of history, during which it met with various roles: a venue for gladiator
performances, tournaments, capital punishment executions, theatre performances
and nowadays it is the venue for the opera festival which takes place every
year.
