Portugal - Marvao
Walled historic center, mediaeval fortress

The small town, about 230 km northeast of Lisbon and near the Spanish border, is situated on an about 860 meters (2,820 feet ) high rock plateau. Time seems to have stood still here and throughout the centuries the town could preserve its mediaeval charm.. The historic centre is still completely surrounded by giant rocky fortifications from the 13th century and the narrow cobblestone lanes are lined with whitewashed houses. The main attraction however is the castle, that towers over the town and offers spectacular views of the surrounding countryside. It originates from a Moorish fort from the 9th cent., but what we see today is the state with improvements and developments form the 13th cent. A walk through the old town and especially on the city walls is a rewarding experience.
